The purpose of this committee is to respond to citizen complaints about major shortcomings in the transportation infrastructure of the Outer Banks – shortcomings, which aggravate congestion. Problem areas include:
- The Midway intersection on Roanoke Island;
- The intersection in Kitty Hawk adjacent to the Aycock Brown Center;
- The center “suicide” lane on US 158 (the bypass);
- Inadequate signage, turn lanes and turnoff lanes;
- Backed-up traffic and unsafe conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians on two-lane state highways such as NC 12 and Colington Road; and
- Lack of coordinated planning for future highway improvements, including storm water drainage, among all the local political jurisdictions.
The ITRE Study provides suggestions for:
- Road designs that incorporate vegetated medians, coordinated turns and timed signals (superstreets);
- New intersection design concepts; and
- Other less dramatic changes that can improve traffic flow.
This committee will work with these suggestions and others, which committee members bring to the table, to develop plans for future infrastructure improvements in problem areas. Other ongoing transportation studies will provide useful input for the work of this committee and will not be replicated by the committee. They include the Currituck Sound Transportation Study, the Roanoke Island Transportation Study, and the NCDOT Study of Colington Road.
